The Heart of the Community
Independent bookstores often serve as the hearts of their communities. They provide a welcoming environment where readers can gather, share ideas, and discover new authors. Unlike large chain stores, independent bookstores prioritize personal connections and community involvement.
Monarch Books - Pendleton, IN

Monarch Books in Pendleton, IN is currently undergoing an expansion to increase its size. Owner, Jazzy Myers is hard at work to make her store the best it can be.
"I want this to be a space for people to be able to hang out," Myers stated. She will be closed the entire month of August to build bookshelves and create a comfortable seating area for her customers.
"To be human is to tell a story," Myers expresses. "That's what pulls us apart from any other living species here on earth... We are an imaginative and expressive bunch. It is an honor and a blessing to have a key that unlocks a room full of books - a room full of human kind."
Twice Read Books & More - Richmond, IN

What was once a mobile business, is now a permanent staple in the town!
Richmond was officially blessed with the quaint Twice Read Books & More in November 2025.
Just off the main drag, Twice Read Books is owned and operated by Courtney McCauley, aka indie author C.J. McCauley. The store is mainly fantasy and romance, but carries books of all genres - new and used!
It is the perfect place to visit if you need to add to your TBR and get cute pictures for social media while you're at it.
Twice Read often has sold out events and even hosts local authors for signings.
Moonlit Vine - Beech Grove, IN

On June 20, 2026 Paige Maudlin officially opened the doors of Moon Lit Vine in Beech Grove, IN.
"I've been reading most of my life," Maudlin says. "My reader friends and I would always talk about what it would be like to open a bookstore, and when I moved to Beech Grove and saw the downtown Main Street area I told myself this would be the perfect place for a store if any of these buildings became available."
The inviting and relaxing space offers a curated selection of romance and fantasy books as well as mysteries, thrillers and LOCAL AUTHORS! Not to mention, 21+ patrons can enjoy beverages from the store's bar! Moonlit also offers alcohol-free drinks.
"I wanted my bookstore to be different," Maudlin continued. "The space (which was originally a bar) gave me the opportunity to blend the bar aspect with the bookstore and I really wanted the name to capture that."
Maudlin loves moons and since the store has more of a night-time vibe with later hours she was able to fuse literature and wine into the store's name. "I wanted to take people out of their every day lives and transport them into a magical forest... so when designing Moon Lit Vine I put a lot of thought into my space."
Moon Lit Vine has successfully combined the fantasy elements with the warm and cozy undertones to create a space that is definitely worth your attention!
Supporting Local Economies
Independent bookstores contribute significantly to local economies. They often source their inventory from local publishers and authors, keeping money within the community. This practice not only supports local businesses but also strengthens the literary ecosystem in Indiana.
Economic Impact
According to a study by the American Booksellers Association, independent bookstores generate approximately $7.1 billion in revenue annually. This figure highlights the economic importance of these establishments. In Indiana, independent bookstores create jobs, support local authors, and contribute to the overall vibrancy of their communities.
Challenges Faced by Independent Bookstores
While independent bookstores play a vital role in economic growth, they face several challenges that threaten their existence. Understanding these challenges is crucial for supporting these valuable community resources.
Standing Out
With big name retailers overtaking the spotlight, it can be difficult for independent bookstores to make a name for themselves. That is why it is imperative that these stores stand out amongst the crowd.
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc., have millions of dollars to back their marketing and sales, while most local businesses have to take out loans just to begin operating.
Big name stores are able to rely on their brand name alone as well as online retail. Most independent stores don't have the resources to compete at such an accelerated pace or scale.
What they don't tell you about starting your own business is that you are also your own marketer, event planner, and designer!
Bookstore owners spend hours curating their social media and keeping their websites up-to-date. Not to mention keeping up with inventory.
Slim Margins and Seasonal Success
Overhead is a huge set back for many indies. With rent, utilities, labor expense, and many other obstacles, the majority of daily earnings only come out to 5.3-5.8.
The stores have to sell their products just to keep their doors open. Typically, indie bookstores aren't very profitable. You have to really love it to want to take on the challenge. Most are operating on thin net profit margins of about 2% to 8%.
Another issue these businesses face is what is called a busy season. Some stores have tons of traffic when the general public is on summer break. Other stores have more customers during the winter holidays.
These bumps in the road should definitely be taken into account when looking for your next read!
Conclusion
Independent bookstores are not only humble contributors to the local economy, but they foster relaxing spaces for readers to enjoy their hobby. Despite facing challenges from online retailers and rising costs, these bookstores continue to adapt and thrive. By supporting independent bookstores, we are supporting local businesses and real people.
Next time you’re looking for a book, consider visiting your local independent bookstore. You might just discover your new favorite place to purchase from.
